Asbestos management and compliance update for RICS Building Surveyors through Silverdell’s SAFE Training and Redhills

Speakers from SAFE Training, the education division of Silverdell Plc and Redhills the specialist environmental consultancy were invited to address members of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) on the subject of Asbestos Management at their CPD Accredited RICS Building Surveyors Technical Update Conferences, held at various locations throughout the UK throughout June and July.

With around 100,000 qualified members and over 50,000 students and trainees in some 140 countries, RICS provides the world's leading professional qualifications in land, property, construction and the associated environmental issues. Building Surveyors work in an industry where technology is constantly evolving and their requirements to comply with asbestos legislation is regularly changing.

The series of one day seminars were designed to be packed full of informative presentations to ensure that the Building Surveyors’ and subsequently their clients’ understanding of industry compliance issues is as up to date as possible. The sessions were attended by RICS Building Surveyors - ranging from those newly qualified through to senior management in private practice, local government, public bodies and client organisations.

Attendees benefited from practical, topical information to ensure their knowledge and understanding is current.

They learned about future asbestos compliance issues and asbestos legislation changes that might affect their industry. The Asbestos Update sessions were delivered by speakers from SAFE Training and Redhills both from the Silverdell PLC Group of companies. The sessions covered:

  • Asbestos: The basics
  • Asbestos Legislation
  • The duty to manage asbestos and procedures
  • Ongoing asbestos compliance

With asbestos in buildings continuing to be a challenge for those involved in anything from the day to day management of a building to large scale refurbishment, we are regularly reminded that this is not only a problem of the past, it continues to be a problem for the future.

Over 4,000 people die every year from asbestos related diseases making it the biggest workplace killer in the UK. Figures from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) show that around a quarter of the 4,000 or so people dying from asbestos-related diseases each year in Britain are tradesmen such as joiners, electricians and plumbers.

About twenty lose their lives each week.
